Bird Nest Dessert Soup (燕窝)

It's been a while since I blog here. Well, time for some dessert! This is a bird nest dessert soup. People consume this dish for various reasons, but personallly, I just love this dish as simple as it is and it is said to promote cell growth and tissue repairs.
Well, you can read more here: Benefits of consuming bird's nest.
I must mention it here that, there are many kinds of bird nest, the cooking time may vary with the different type of nest too; also these bird nest are expensive. I only consume this dish once in a blue moon! :)

Bird Nest Dessert Soup 燕窝 (serves 2)

2 pieces    Bird nest
6 pcs         Red dates
8 pcs         American Ginseng Shreds
1-2 bowls Water
100g         Rock sugar (to taste)

  1. Soak the bird nest overnight with clean water. ( You can soaked it for 2 nights but must change the water) This step is to remove all the chemicals and make the bird nest soft.
  2. Some bird nest are not properly clean, so you have to pick the small feathers out yourself after soaking. Clean it properly.
  3. Now prepare your double boiler, rinse the other ingredients and place it all in the pot  except the rock suger, and cook for at least 3-4 hours. If you are using a slow cooker, the time is the same.
  4. Depends on your bird nest, some can melt and turn into water after 4 hours, but some remain intact. I cook mine for at least 6 hours in the slow cooker; and it is still intact.
  5. Lastly add in your rock sugar and let it simmer for another half an hour before consuming.
